Independence Day Messages From Political Parties

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has extended its warmest felicitations to Ghanaians on the occasion of the country's 57th independence anniversary.

In a statement issued in Accra and signed by Mr. Johnson Asiedu-Nketiah, General Secretary of the NDC, the party appealed to all Ghanaians to be guided by the sacrifices made by the nation's leaders who fought to free the country from the shackles of colonialism.

'We believe our forefathers foresaw a bright and prosperous future through hard work and dedication. The NDC urges Ghanaians to use the occasion to remind ourselves of the need to continue to uphold the principles of the founding fathers, which are enshrined in the country's motto – freedom and justice', the statement said.

It said the hard work and unity of Ghana's forbearers had culminated in the peace that Ghana had enjoyed over the past five decades and the NDC expected Ghanaians would work for the maintenance of the peace and stability prevailing in the country.

The statement said the NDC was committed to the course of democratic governance being pursued by Ghana and would not relent on its efforts to collaborate with all stakeholders to nurture and sustain multi-party rule in Ghana.

The NDC  urged  Ghanaians to on this occasion remember the sacrifices of the forefathers, workers, farmers, fishermen, the security services, women, the youth and all Ghanaians who had toiled to bring Ghana that far.

The statement expressed the hope that the examples of Ghana's forefathers would inspire the current generation in efforts to build a better Ghana. GNA

Independence day is here with us again and as usual we are going through the ritual of flogging ourselves about how little we have achieved, considering the significant natural resources put at our disposal - gold, diamond, bauxite, manganese, oil and gas and soil that delivers cocoa, timber, rice, maize etc, plus human capital that is celebrated in many parts of the world.  

We are comparing our slow march with that of Singapore, Malaysia and South Korea, and feel distressed by how little our accomplishments are compared to theirs.  

Some claim we have lost our independence.   Others respond that we never had it.   There are still people who argue that we should not have become an independent nation in the first place because we have proven not capable of managing our own affairs.  

So much of nostalgic feelings are being poured on us by many who have seen a better Ghana than the one we have presently.   In the end our people blame our leaders - who for the most part were put in their positions by we the people.

This 6 th of March, I suggest that we all brighten the corners we find ourselves in.   If we all did that, we the people will take ownership of our country and improve it, develop it and make it great and strong.  

We will not cry about our leaders because we will put them there in a more thoughtful manner; and with great expectations.    Because we will know that who we put there will determine how well we prosper.   We cannot plant a lemon seed and hope for a sweet mango.

GHANA AT 57
The New Patriotic Party wishes the government and people of Ghana the very best on the occasion of 57 years of independence. 

As a people, we are proud and confident to have blazed the trail amongst countries south of the Sahara to have attained our right to self-rule, a right to think, a right to grow our lot, a right to development in freedom and with our destiny in our own hands.

However, as we celebrate our 57 th anniversary today, we do so with a heavy heart. Though governments have come and gone, both civilian and military, never in the country's history have we been more ridiculed around the world than today.

Ghana, the once respected nation in the sub-region, the financial hub of West Africa, the Gateway to Africa, is now labeled a Republic of Corruption.

The unprecedented corruption perpetuated on the good people of Ghana by the Mahama administration has caused harsh economic conditions unrivaled in the country's 57 years history.

57 years, the dream of a truly democratic Ghana has dulled more than a little. Hope has been replaced by dismay at the cheap pursuit of self-interest that pervades our present political and economic landscape.

For the past 6 years Ghana has stopped working.   After 57 years of trying, the NPP believes that we have had enough of the lip service. It is time we all put our shoulder to the wheel with budding ideas and innovation to make sure that as a nation we succeed. Our agricultural produce must reach our markets; we must process our produce to not only feed our people but also for exports. 

Our resources must be put to good use and not be abused through corrupt practices like we have seen in recent times.

We need leadership of ideas and pragmatism to lead the way in bringing on board every Ghanaian to make us succeed.

Our nation is at a crossroads yearning for leadership and bold measures towards a total and progressive transformation process out of our current challenges.

It is time to reflect on the past and plan fervently for the future of our people.

The future beckons to us. We must bring freedom and opportunity to the common man, to the peasants and workers of Ghana; to fight and end poverty and ignorance and disease; to build up a prosperous, democratic and progressive nation, and to create social, economic and political institutions which will ensure justice and fullness of life to every man and woman.

The United States Embassy in Accra has conveyed felicitations to President John Dramani Mahama and the people of Ghana on the occasion of the 57th Independence Anniversary of Ghana.
