It is expected that Ghanaian local and peasant farmers would be heavily disadvantaged, marginalised and become vulnerable to multinational farmers if government and parliament effect the Plant Breeders Bill into law which enforces the introduction of Genetically Modified Organism (GMOs) foods.

Speaking at a Capacity building and skills sharing workshop on Bio safety seed laws, Intellectual property and Farmers Right in Accra, the Vice Chairperson of Food Sovereignty, Ghana, Duke Tagoe said the methods of growing and nurturing GMO crops are expensive for small holder farmers to engage in largely because of its dependence on pesticide and fertilizer which comes with health, economic and environmental consequences.

He was of the view that Ghana does not need GMO foods to complement her food stock but rather adequate support for local farmers with subsidies to increase the country's yields.
