The Ghana Private Roads Transport Union (GPRTU) says users of public transport should expect an increase in fares.

“Definitely there will be an increase in the transport fares,” the Greater Accra Regional Chairman of the GPRTU, Robert Sabah said.

This is as a result of an announcement by the National Petroleum Authority (NPA) on Wednesday over a 6 % increment in petrol, 7 % increment in diesel and a 9% increment in Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) and unified oil per liter.

Speaking to Citi News Mr. Robert Sabah revealed that a meeting will be held to determine the next line of action.

According to him, the increment has become necessary because last year there was an increase in fuel prices by 3%, but drivers were advised not to increase their fares.

But because the increment is about 6.39% there will be an increase in fares.

Meanwhile, some commercial drivers in the metropolis say they will increase their fares if the GPRTU delays in announcing the new fares.

“We are waiting for our leaders although we know it is going to affect the job” some drivers said.

Some drivers were of the opinion that the NPA should begin to involve their leaders anytime there is an increment in fuel. This according to them will help in the decision making process.
