According to him, the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) remains the official examination for assessment and placement of students.

Mr Oppong was speaking at the launch of the 20th annual conference of the Conference of Directors of Education (CODE) in Cape Coast, on the theme; 'Achieving quality education through partnership and innovation; The role of the Director of Education.'

He also called for the immediate expansion of facilities in the various senior high schools to enable more candidates to be placed.

Mr Oppong said the CSSPS was faced with the task of how to fill the 250,000 declared vacancies in 600 senior high schools with the 399,280 candidates for the Basic Education Certificate Examination next academic year.

The shortfall in vacancies, he stated, was of grave concern for the CSSPS and, therefore, urged the government to work at ensuring that SHSs in the country were expanded to contain the possible overflows.

Mr Oppong said the CSSPS was working to ensure that all qualified candidates gained admission to the schools.

He said despite the challenges, the CSSPS would ensure that heads of schools did not under-declare vacancies and that qualified students were rightly placed.

The National President of CODE, Mrs Rosemond Keteku, in her address, said CODE would work to ensure that academic performance in the schools was improved.

She advised the directors to work to ensure that they achieved quality education and training for the Ghanaian child.

The Central Regional Minister, Mr Samuel Sarpong, reiterated that the government was committed to building the promised 200 senior high schools in various parts of the country to increase access to secondary education.

He appealed to the directors of education to strengthen supervision to help improve the quality of teaching and learning in the schools.
