First female registrar of Legon sworn in

Mrs. Haizel-Ashia, 51, thus becomes the first female Registrar of the University of Ghana, taking over from Mr Joseph Maafo Budu, who has proceeded on statutory retirement. The Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ghana, Prof Ernest Aryeetey, paid tribute to Mr Budu.

He said the University had benefited from him and learnt from his virtues, which include his patience, adding that the University was grateful to Mr. Budu for his dedicated service.

Prof Aryeetey expressed the hope that Mr Budu would continue to share his experiences with the university.

On behalf of the university management, Prof Aryeetey congratulated Mrs. Haizel-Ashia on her new appointment.

He also commended her impressive professional administrative capabilities and extensive management experience acquired over 25 years in the university.

He said the university had high expectations from her as her appointment had come at a time when the institution was going through several structural changes and as the role of the Registrar was being re-defined as the Chief Operating Officer.

The Vice-Chancellor called on officers at the various levels in the university to support and co-operate with Mrs. Haizel-Ashia in her new role as Registrar.

Mrs. Haizel-Ashia thanked the University for the Honour and responsibility placed on her as Registrar and affirmed her commitment to the University's aspirations to restructure into the collegiate system, become a research university and ultimately become a world-class university.

The new registrar pledged to uphold the vision of the Vice-Chancellor in working towards the realization of the university's strategic objectives and upholding the needs of stakeholders by developing an efficient administrative system rooted in a culture of responsiveness, innovation and professionalism.

Mr. Budu expressed happiness to be handing over to Mrs. Haizel-Ashia, saying that she had the right attitude needed for the role of a registrar.
