President John Mahama has stressed that his government will at no point in time, cancel the Single Spine Pay Policy (SSPP).

'We have come far and opting out of the Single Spine Salary Structure (SSSS) or cancelling the programme, is not an option for government.'

The President made the assertion at a stakeholders meeting aimed at finding the most prudent way of effectively implementing the SSSS to reduce the strain the scheme is having on government expenditure.

Addressing the forum in Ho on Tuesday, the President stated that although it was undeniable that the SSSS has 'led to an increase in income and enhanced standard of living of public service workers to a large extent,' a review of the pay policy was necessary.

He gave the assurance that despite the numerous challenges the scheme was facing, government was committed 'to implementing the SSPP to achieve the stated policy objectives and goals as stated in government's white paper on the Single Spine Pay Policy.'

The President pointed out that the primary cause of the difficulties being experienced with the Single Spine Salary Structure (SSSS) was the absence of a well thought out plan to implement the scheme within budgetary constraints.

'In my estimation, the one major missing factor that was not carefully thought out and considered was the implementation of the Single Spine Pay Policy (SSPP) within budgetary constraints to make the scheme sustainable.'

He therefore charged the stakeholders at the forum, 'to engage in a frank, non-partisan discussion to generate options and feasible strategies and build consensus on critical issues within the broader context of our national quest for accelerated economic development.'
