Kumasi, July 26, GNA - A two-day regional sensitisation workshop on the Ghana Integrated Financial Management Information System (GIFMIS), designed to help improve fiscal discipline and macro-economic stability has opened in Kumasi.

The GIFMIS seeks to comprehensibly address challenges in the Public Financial Management (PFM).

The Controller and Accountant General's Department is organising the workshop for its staff in Ashanti Region to acquaint themselves with the nature and operations of the new system, which is a component of the public sector financial management programme.

Mrs Grace Adzroe, the acting Director of the Department, said the GIFMIS is going to serve as the official system of recording to meet the government's budget, disbursements, financial accounting and reporting, internal control and auditing requirements.

Information Communication Technology based PFM Information Systems functionality would be established across treasuries, ministries, departments and agencies and the metropolitan, municipal and district assemblies.

She said the benefits to be derived include accurate, timely, reliable budgeting, accounting and reporting.

Mr Samuel Yaw Adusei, Deputy Regional Minister, said it is refreshing that career issues of officers and staff of the accounting class have also found space at the workshop.

He said the public sector continues to grow in complexity and with the issues of accountability, transparency, and the need to eschew corruption, public servants have to become more professional and reliable.

He urged the participants, made up deputy controllers and assistant controllers, accountants, district finance officers to embrace the system and to make it work in the interest of the nation.
