Legon Suspends 'School Feeding' Policy Indefinitely

The University of Ghana has suspended its intended 'School Feeding' programme for students indefinitely. This decision was taken by a committee which was set up to check the feasibility of the whole policy.

The committee was chaired by the Pro VC of the University, Prof. Kweku E. Osam. The Students Representative Council (SRC) of the University was represented on the committee by Mikdad Mohammed (Legon SRC PRO) and Tabitha Naa Addy.

In an exclusive interview with myJCR News, Mr. Mohammed disclosed that the main reason for the suspension of the policy was the timing and uncertainty that clouded its impact on school fees.

Before the suspension, the student representatives, guided by necessary briefing by the SRC President (Eric Edem Agbana), had managed to convince the committee to drop the 'compulsory component' that was initially associated with the policy and to reduce the cost as much as possible for students.

Mr. Mohammed continued that whether the policy will be brought back in the future or not, the SRC's stance remain same: maximizing the benefit students can get from the policy at the least available cost, while ensuring that University management does not take students for an undue ride.

Prof. Ernest Aryeetey, Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ghana, announced during a students' durbar last semester that the University will roll out 'Meal Plans' beginning from 2013/2014 Academic Year.

The 'Meal Plan' was a measure the University intended to put in place to protect the lives of students after a research conducted by the Noguchi Memorial Institute showed that food eaten by the university's students on daily basis are prepared in unhygienic conditions and pose serious health hazard.

The durbar, dubbed 'Vice-Chancellor's Interaction with Students', was the second to be held as part of measures to educate the students on new policies and programmes being undertaken by the University.
