Catto Nico held off a strong field in the Men A Division for a defining, classy and fully fitting win during the CDS Special at the Tema Country Golf Club, which was sponsored by Zipnet; a Wifi and Enterprise services company.
Put together by the club to honor fellow golfer Vice Admiral Mathew Quarshie on his appointment as Chief of Defense Staff (CDS) of the Ghana Armed Forces, the day witnessed impressive golfing, massive patronage and exciting renditions by the GAF Brass Band.
Nicco' entered the game with a winning feeling that translated into a winning round to become the round of the day after he posted a net score of 67 off handicap 9 to clinch the stunning trophy, CPE and 6 months free subscription from Zipnet.
Nico comes off a similar showdown during the Asantehene Gold Cup where he routed the Men Handicap Division.
With the wind behind during the CDS Special, Nico's drive on the par-4 second was powerful to ensure that it went straight and far. With about 200 yards to the green, he went on to play the 4-iron that eventually saw the green for an easy up and down for birdie.
'Hole 18 was about the same,' he said. Here, he actually split the middle of the fairway with his tee shot and hit a 4-iron on the bright side of the green to later set him up for a birdie on the par-5 eighteenth to make up two birdies for the day.
He recorded two bogeys and one double bogey on the front nine and two bogeys on the back nine amidst twelve pars to complete the round for a 2-shot victory over A. Y Fiagome who returned a net score of 69 off 8.
Esau. K Emezado was beaten on countback for third place on handicap 13 whiles Emmanuel Ocansey managed 71 off 7 for the fourth position.
In the Ladies A Division, Adelaide Owusu Adjapong cruised on to victory despite her early struggles for 69 off 20 to beat into second position Lizzy Aku Yaba with a net score of 73. Margaret Oppong came third with 74.
J. Otoo combined driving accuracy and focus to win the Men B Division on a net score of 70 off 16. Counsel Richard Boateng came second on 73 with Hon. Felix Owusu Adjapong third on same score but separated on countback.
Helen Appah and Cherie Hammond were first and second respectively in the Ladies B Division.
A very engaging, sidesplitting speech by Vice Admiral Mathew Quarshie was enough to set the club askew with roars and cheers. He thanked the club, Zipnet and fellow golfers for the honor done him and promised to use his office to deliver well-disciplined, professional and committed armed forces for the good of all. Various winners received trophies and free internet subscriptions from the sponsor.
Sir Sam Jonah, Comordor Rtd K.K Pumpuni, Dr. Felix Frempong(GGA Pres.) were among the dignitaries that graced the event.
