Bad Leadership- Part One

Bad Leadership- Part One

In crisis, people want to know what leadership is. However, what does leadership mean? What a leader does and how leadership task is done differ from pure management. Opinions regarding the requisite qualities and attitudes of leaders are many and diverse, but some common themes rhyme through them (James M. Kouzes and Barry Z. Posner).

Remember, no single style of leadership is perfect for every situation. A business for profit leadership will be different from that of not-for- profit business.

A number of management theorists don't buy the idea that leadership is the key factor in determining an organization's success. They assert that a winning organizational culture, or efficient work processes, or any number of other ancillary attributes that lead to success.

I agree with them that those things are important. However, leadership takes precedence over everything else. One reason leadership takes precedence is that leaders are the people who decide what needs to be done and the ones who make things happen. Another reason that leadership takes precedence over the contributions of culture and management tools is that it's the leaders who create the cultures and use the tools.

Culture-based
There is believed that national cultures and relational distance impact leader-follower relationships (Jelinek and Adler, 1988).  Furthermore, cultural issues impact both individual decisions (how to market a particular product, for example, needs consumers multi-cultures incorporated) and organizational operations (if certain practices or methods are not used in a host country, the overarching corporate strategy can create tension).

Leadership
Under business management strategy, effective leaders produce includes:  High productivity; Low turnover;    High customer satisfaction; High profitability; Innovation solutions; and Positive relationship with stakeholders.

Organizational decisions are paramount in mind versus allowing personal agenda to influence decisions.

Hire nice people and not people who are only pretty, as it is easier to teach nice people to carry on with the organizational required skills and not people who know how to complete the paper works.

The four stages model of career growth: depending on others; contributing independently; accepting contributing views from others; and leading through a vision.

Organization Strategy-the leader knows this better than anyone in the organization.

Mission, Vision, and Competitive advantage by keeping the firm tradition alive

The Difference between Management and Leadership

Management is about coping with the daily complexities of the organization whereas leadership is about coping with change.

Leadership:
Motivating People vs. Controlling and Problem Solving

Good leaders motivate people in a variety of ways. In creating a culture of leadership, for instance, a boss is one who clings to power, but a leader delegates and defers to the experience and expertise of others. As noted, in healthy organizations, people form their own opinions and managers take note of them. In some organizations, the boss makes all the decisions, that's not leadership.

A core value of some organizations is the promotion of leadership qualities and skills, across all units - business, education, technology, and health care. As organizations operate in an increasingly global environment, we must devote attention to global awareness and cultural sensitivity among leaders.

Advancements and obsolete technologies, the environment, global economies and politics have created an interconnected world community.  In turn, this global connectivity has increased the need for global awareness among leaders and followers.  This need for global awareness has created new opportunities, and challenges for leadership.  In order to prepare leaders who are globally aware, scholars must consider how past and current trends and variables impact leadership.

Leadership Threats are:· The changing nature of leadership; The impact of our global environment on the nature and practice of leadership; The impact of culture on leadership; and Unifying leadership to create a true global awareness.

To be an effective leader in a global society, access to peers and current information on leadership are salient. Finding the time to collaborate with peers and the time to access current information can be a challenge to the busy, in demand professional in a leadership position. One way to gain knowledge in a global society is through a connected community of peers, a community in which members can collaborate to share information.

The Legacy You Leave Is the Life You Lead

Much as compelling words are essential to uplifting spirits, exemplary leaders know that constituents are moved by deeds. They expect leaders to show up, to pay attention, and to participate directly in the process of getting extraordinary things done.

Leaders take every opportunity to show others by their own example that they are deeply committed to the aspirations they champion leading by example is how leaders make visions and values tangible.

It is how they provide the evidence that they are personally committed, you have to execute. When it comes to deciding whether a leader is believable, people first listen to the words and then watch the actions. A judgment of 'credible' is handed down when the two are consonant. How you lead your life is how people judge whether they want to put their lives in your hands. Leaders are judged by how they spend their time, how they react to critical incidents, the stories they tell, the questions they ask, the language and symbols they choose, and the measures they use.

Things that fuel the super fires of cynicism such as hypocrisy, and leaders need to be constantly vigilant about aligning what they practice with what they preach. If you dream of leaving a legacy, then it is better to heed to the Golden Rule of Leadership: DWYSYWD—do what you say you will do.
