Some chiefs in this country are trying to use some means to dispose of peoples land through unreasonable ways.
A couple approached us that they want a land to buy and as a matter of fact, they are interested in one of our vast land at Akyem Amanfrom near Akyem Apedwa. After meeting them at where the land is to survey a portion for them, a gentleman amongst them raised an issue that unless the chief and the town committee are present before the negotiations can go on. I first of all objected to that but was later agreed we should see the chief.
At the chiefs palace we told him why we are there and he welcomed us nicely. But according to him, the land we have negotiate with the buyer for GHc 1500 is wrongin the case that, lands there are on a fix price basis that is Ghc 600. I don't have a problem with the chiefs price but he add another rule that I didn't agree with him, the chief told us that it is a law he has passed that out of the GHc 600 he is entitle to Ghc 300 and the land owner is also entitle to Ghc 300.
I caution the chief about why he is demanding the 50/50 share of the money with the land owner? What he told me was 'I should have taken the whole amount'. And am asking is this logic?
I left the Chiefs palace with the couples and they told me that the chief has taken all their lands from them of which they don't know the reason. Another lady approached me and said she heard the chief and the committee are targeting our lands to be their next confiscating point to sell them by themselves.
Am asking does a chief has the right to tell a land owner how much he should sell his land? Is it logic for a chief to tell the land owner that they must share money received in 50:50? Or use his powers to sell the lands he doesn't have papers by claiming he is the chief.
The natives of Akyem Amanfrom are complaining about this behaviour and laws of this Amanfrom hene and I hope it's the media that can alert the public to condemn it.
