The Central Regional Commander of the Ghana Police Service, DCOP Ransford Moses Ninson has stated that the region has recorded 20,181 criminal cases in 2012 as against 19,305 in the year 2011.
This he said shows an increase of 876 cases and described the situation as bad.
DCOP Ninson gave the breakdown as murder; 49, threat of death; 712, stealing; 3,111, narcotics; 46, robbery; 254, rape; 14, defilement; 273 and criminal abortion; 21.
He hinted that measures such as effective visibility foot and mobile patrols, intelligence gathering and swoops on criminal hideouts, snap checks have been put in place to check these offences.
The regional police commander disclosed these at Cape Coast on Friday during their 2012 annual 'WASSA'.
DCOP Ninson said the motor traffic offences recorded in the region in 2012 was 1279 as against 1120 in 2011, while 229 people were killed in 2012 as against 247 in 2011.
'Persons injured were 1447 in 2012 as against 1289 in 2011, this can be attributed to drivers attitude, mechanical fault, nature of our roads and increase of vehicles on the road, so I would urge stakeholders to collaborate effectively with the police to curb the menace', he added.
He mentioned some of the measures put in place to fight crime in the area as building partnership and community engagement with all stakeholders, using democratic policing principles and proactive approaches in solving problems so as to enhance the image of the service as well as winning the confidence of the general public.
The regional police commander reminded the public about the police administration intension to reward informants who would give credible information leading to the arrest of criminals who committed heinous crimes.
DCOP Ninson charged personnel to be discipline in the discharge of their duties to create a peaceful environment for the people in the country to ensure rapid economic growth to attain the middle income status that the country was yearning for.
Some hardworking and dedicated workers were awarded.
The regional president for House of Chiefs, Daasebre Kwebu Ewusi VII noted that police officers have contributed invaluably to the country on daily basis through the prevention of crime and apprehending offenders both foreign and domestic, to maintain public order and safety.
