A three-day Internet Governance and Standards Development workshop to sensitise the internet community on key issues affecting the sector opened in Accra on Tuesday.
The workshop, organised by the Internet Society (ISOC), Ghana Chapter, was to build technical capacity in internet standards development and protocol analysis for engineers and professionals in industry, government and academia.
Topics to be discussed include Internet Infrastructure, Introduction to Internet Governance and Standards and Cyber Security.
Mr William Tevie, Director General of National Information Technology Agency (NITA), said as a government information technology service provider, the agency had built a 10GBPS fiber optics in the Ministries enclaves with three 4GBP rings linked to this backbone.
He said a National Data Centre was also under construction and would be completed by September this year.
“Ten Ministries, Departments and Agencies, including Birth and Death Registry, National Communication Authority, Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority, now have online services on government e-services portal,” he stated.
Mr Tevie said an online payment gateway had also been installed and would be inaugurated soon to make information technology possible for business and citizens to buy online services without recourse to offline payment systems.
He said NITA was also in the process of deploying a public key infrastructure that would enable government and citizens to communicate on security issues using digital signatures.
Professor Nii Narku Quaynor, Chairperson of ISOC- Ghana, said the internet society needed to be owned by Ghanaians to advance the country's development.
He said the internet had truly changed the way things were done and had helped to improve the economic growth of the nation.
He said the provision of internet service in the country would be 20 years in November this year.
Prof Quaynor said the country needed a multi-sectoral stakeholder's platform to deliberate on the way forward for internet accessibility to rural communities.
He urged Ghanaians to participate more in internet connectivity where the multi-nationals are now focusing.
