Man appears in court on drug charges

Accra, May 20, GNA - Emmanuel Yartey Coffie, a pensioner has appeared before an Accra Circuit Court for possessing substances suspected to be Indian hemp.

Emmanuel was caught at Korle Gonno with two bundles of the dried leaves wrapped in a piece of paper.

The accused pleaded not guilty and was remanded into Police custody to reappear on June 3, 2013.

Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP), Patrick Morkeh said on May 17, 2013 at about 0500 hours, Police personnel from the Korle Bu and Mamprobi District Police Stations organised an exercise to clamp down on activities of 'wee smokers' at the Korle Gonno beach.

He said the accused was seen at the beach holding a black polythene bag which he threw away and jumped into the sea on seeing the Police.

When the Police searched the polythene bag, a pair of scissors, four boxes of matches and two bundles of dried leaves suspected to be Indian hemp were found.

Prosecution said the officers watched the accused swam for a while and later arrested him and charged him with the offense. GNA
