Accra, May 17, GNA- Mr Christopher Baborah, a Director at the Department of Social Welfare, has urged government to develop a holistic child protection policy to safeguard children against violence and abuse.

Government must also provide more funds for child protection programmes.

Mr Baborah was addressing a four-day regional training workshop for West Africa Network for Child Protection in Accra.

The workshop was organised by The Research and Counseling Foundation for African Migrants (RECFAM) and the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) with sponsorship from the SWISS Foundation of the International Social Welfare.

The workshop, which attracted participants from countries in the sub-region, including Ghana, The Gambia, Nigeria, Liberia and Togo aimed at discussing and finding solutions to address child protection challenges.

Mr Baborah said the West Africa Network had plans to have national and transnational measures to respond to the protection needs of children.

Mr Iddris Abdalla, a Child Specialist at UNICEF, said member countries in the sub-region should strengthen their coalition to protect children from abuses.

He said many children die in the process of child migration, adding that UNICEF as part of its child protection policy had invested funds and institute child protection policy with emphasis on preventive measures.
