The Great Consolidated Party is very sad and sorry for the fatal fire that has engulfed Kantamanto a popular economic nerve of the city of Accra.
Actually the whole country is shocked and sad as a result of this catastrophe.
It is a shame that so many businesses have had to pay the penalty for the monstrous fire on Sunday.
As we count our losses, it is important to support the displaced businesses as soon as possible.
The support mechanism that the government is planning to put in place to help the victims must start work very quickly to reduce the suffering of our business people who contribute a lot to the tax revenues and also the market needs of this city.
We appeal to the Fire Service to intensify and expand their training services to most of the markets to educate the traders on fire protection practices so that we do not experience such fire destruction on this scale ever again .Fire out breaks has unfortunately been on the increase and has to be checked.
The committee that is going to look into the disaster must also talk to fire experts/city engineers so that they can come out with practical / real solutions for now and future fire policies for implementation as soon as possible.
An intense investigation and a number of appropriate changes must be instituted.
What should we learn from this fire?
Occupancy limit requirements should be strictly enforced at every market.
Exits need to be kept clear of obstructions and plainly marked at all markets.
Electrical installations should be vigorously checked by the ECG at all markets.
Fire hazard regulations must be strictly implemented at all markets.
Exit drills must be mandatory
Insurance Policy is very important and crucial for business.
May God give the victims the strength and nerve to deal with this tragedy.
As we all know, change takes time.
Each of us can make a difference. We should learn from the past and prepare for the future.
