Former MP Slams MPs Over Ex-Gratia

The controversy over the ex-gratia of Members of Parliament (MP) has raised several eyebrows and outrage among the citizenry in the country.

Dr. Francis Daicura, the former Member of Parliament (MP) for Jirapa in the Upper West Region has broken silence on the controversial MPs ex-gratia.

The former legislative member described the way and manner by which the matter was been discuss in the media as holistic and whole sale manner.

According to him MPs have their fair share of the blame since they pose extravagant life style for the people to think that their better off.

Whiles MP's work depends heavily on spending, he said one cannot visit his or her constituency with less than five thousand Ghana cedis.

With this, he said the MP would have to go borrowing spree in other to be able to take care of their constituents needs.

Some of the amount given to them as ex-gratia forms part of the loans they took from the banks and those monies have to be repaid.

Dr Daicura contended that MPs job was the worst one would ever dream of, adding that MPs seats on time bomb.

Dr. Francis Daicura's comments came at the time when the discussion of the MPs ex-gratia dominated the airwaves, people calling on the government to cut spending on the members of the legislature.

Few weeks ago, it was reported that each Member of Parliament would take home two billion Ghana cedis as ex-gratia.

This had not gone down well with some citizens calling on the government to mitigate spending on MPs whiles other professional bodies were also calling for an increase in their salaries.
