The Parliament of Ghana has reacted to the ongoing saga regarding some 46 million Ghana cedis purportedly paid to members of the fifth Parliament as ex-gratia.

A statement by the Director of Public Affairs of Parliament, categorically stated that though Members of Parliament received some payments effected in accordance with the requirements of Article 71 of the constitution, those payments do not only cover ex-gratia.

The statement added that the payments included salary arrears and other statutory payments which had been due as far back as 2009.

It added that the payments were made in four tranches; the first installment paid in November 2012.

It was reported last week that each MP is to be paid 200,000 Ghana cedis as ex-gratia for serving in the last Parliament for four years.

The payment of the ex-gratia came on the heels of agitations by the University Teachers Association for their 10 million Ghana cedis salary arrears to be paid its members in ONE FELL SWOOP before calling off its strike.
