Nsawam, March 25, GNA-The Eastern Regional offices of the Ghana Water Company Limited (GWCL) on Friday held a workshop to mark International Water Day which was on the theme, 'International Year of Water Cooperation' at Nsawam.

The GWCL held the programme in conjunction with the Community, Water and Sanitation Agency (CWSA), teachers and students of some senior high schools (SHSs) in the region.

Mr Mac-Doe Hanyabui, the Acting Regional Chief Manager of the GWCL, said the International Water Day is annually held to focus attention on the importance of freshwater and to advocate for the sustainable management of fresh water resources.

He said with a population of over seven billion in the world, demand for water had gone so high that its sustainability had become very crucial.

Mr Hanyabui called for effective management of water by all and sundry in order to sustain peace in the country, saying, when water resources are cooperatively shared and managed, peace, prosperity and sustainable development are more likely to be achieved.

He said soon portable water in the country could not be guaranteed if the negative attitudes towards pollution of water bodies are not changed.

He said GWCL spent a lot of money on chemicals to treat water from the River Birim and River Densu and 'yet the company is compelled to shut down some of its water treatment plants because the pollution has become unbearable.'

Mr Hanyabui appealed to farmers and lumbers to discontinue their farming and tree cutting activities along the river banks respectively.

'Ghana will be doomed if we continue illegal mining activities in our rivers and streams and we all will also be doomed if we continue to pollute the river bodies by throwing rubbish into the rivers,' he said.

Mr Moses Abeiku Paintsil, Water Quality Assurance Manager of the Ghana Urban Water Limited (GUWL), appealed to the government to strengthen the Buffer Zone Policy to save the nation's water bodies from being destroyed by illegal miners and farmers.
