Daboase (W/R), March 6, GNA — The District Chief Executive (DEC) for Wassa East, Mr. Anthony Aggrey, on Wednesday decried the devastation caused by activities of small-scale miners, popularly called galamsey,  and illegal timber logging in the area.

He said the district would not relent in its quest to flush-out such deviants, and asked stakeholders to put their hands on deck to clamp down on them.

Mr. Aggrey was speaking at the 56th Independence Day celebration held at the district capital, Daboase, under the theme: 'Partnership and Innovation for Building a New and Better Ghana'.

The DCE said the pollution of water bodies by the miners had impeded free flow of  water into the Daboase Water Treatment Plant for processing,  resulting in serious shortfall in water supply to the Sekondi-Takoradi Metropolis, Shama District and Wassa East District.

Mr. Aggrey called on Ghanaians to change their attitude and work collectively towards building a stronger and resilient economy that would stand the test of time to ensure sustainable development.

He said: 'we as a nation have to be innovative in building our nation and ensure that we build a viable and lasting framework for sustainable growth and development.'

Mr Aggrey called for the restructuring of institutions whose inefficiencies and wastefulness have deepened our plight, avoid corruption and engaging in unproductive ventures, towards the attainment of government's Better Ghana Agenda.

He appealed to Ghanaians to collectively combat ignorance, diseases and work hard, to bring out innovative ideas for accelerated national development.

Mr Aggrey appealed to parents to invest in their children's education so that they would become responsible adults and assume leadership roles.

School children drawn from Primary, Junior High School and Senior High School in the district took part in the march pass, varying saluting styles to the admiration of the crowd and dignitaries.

The Assembly presented awards to deserving students and schools that excelled during the last Basic Education Certificate Examination.
