05.03.2013 LISTEN

The Deputy Upper East Regional Youth Organizer of the ruling National Democratic Congress, Mr. Karim Mumin has describes roguish, gratuitous and utterly gibberish the calls for Ghanaians to boycott this year's Independence Anniversary Celebrations by Pressure group Alliance for Accountable Governance (AFAG).

Descending heavily on AFAG, the NDC Deputy Youth Organizer said, Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, J.B. Danquah, A.G. Grant, R.A. Awoonor-Williams, Edward Akufo Addo and other founding fathers of Ghana will be scandalous by AFAG's calls, adding that, “our founding fathers, Ghanaian women and students who laid down their lives for us to have freedom today will be turning on their graves by AFAG's statement”.

The pressure group AFAG are urging Ghanaians to boycott the 56thIndependence Anniversary celebrations, saying the current economic hardship which has been compounded by the power and water crisis should be enough to discourage the populace from participating in the celebration.

But Mr. Karim Mumim reiterated that, the pressure group are intellectual dishonest with the economic issues of the country, saying the arguments by AFAG are misplace and mischievous.

The Upper East Deputy Regional Youth Organizer of the NDC speaking to the media in Bolga said, though the calls by AFAG will not be adhere to by Ghanaians, however AFAG wants to take away the beauty and joy of the celebrations from the thousands of Ghanaian children who will be at the various jubilee parks to mark this historic event.

“It is very unfortunate the way some people play politics with everything” he fumed

He said, Independence Anniversary celebrations have been part of the Ghana history, where every year the Ghanaian people reflect the struggle for independence and how far the country has become.

Mr. Karim said, the Independence anniversary celebration symbolizes the country's spirit of nationalism and patriotism, adding that, “the country has come a long way and people need to appreciate that. We cannot continue to play politics like this… this is cheap politics by AFAG. It's very unfortunate.”

He emphasized that, there is no correlation between the economic situation and marking an independent anniversary of a nation, saying there is no place in the world where a country's independence anniversary celebrations is boycotted just because there are energy and water crisis.

The Deputy NDC Youth Organizer said, when Ghana attains its jubilee year in 2007 there were economic hardships and challenges yet the government at that time spent millions of Ghana cedis to celebrate the country's birthday and therefore urged Ghanaians to ignored AFAG calls but celebrate the 56th Independence Anniversary celebrations of Ghana with pride which is scheduled for tomorrow.

He said, the significance of celebrating Ghana's Independence Anniversary cannot be overemphasized and urged the good people of Ghana to be proud as the country's celebrates its birthday.
