Statistics from the Tano South District Directorate of Health Services in the Brong-Ahafo region has indicated that the District for the past two year recorded zero maternal death in the face of the numerous challenges facing the directorate.

The District Director of Health, Dr. Peter Asare made this made when an NGO, Human Care and Maintenance Foundation donated hospital beds and other equipment to the Bechem Government Hospital and learning and teaching materials to the Presbyterian Senior High School and Methodist Junior School at Bechem, the District capital of Tano South.

The Tano South District is one of the twenty-two administrative districts in the Brong-Ahafo Region and used to be part of Tano District until it was carved out in 2004 as a separate district with projected population of 79 thousand, seven hundred and twenty.

The provision of health care in Bechem was first started as a maternity home in the year 1950 and was later taken over by Presbyterian Church of Ghana

The Presby church run the facility for a while and handed over the management and ownership of the hospital to Ministry of Health in 1st July 1978 which is now under the management of Ghana health Service.

The Hospital currently has total beds of 70 and is poised to increase the capacity to 120 when the surgical and maternity wards currently under construction are complete.

According to Dr. Asare, although the directorate is facing a lot of challenges in the District, prudent measures have put in place to ensure effective and efficient health care delivery.

He mentioned inadequate health personnel, lack of accommodation and logistics, among others as major challenges facing quality health care delivery in the District.

The District therefore appealed to government, NGOs and Philanthropists to assist them with the requisite logistics to enable the directorate to provide the needed health care service

The Administrator of the Hospital, Tanko Iddi Abdulai said the all inclusive package of payment for service delivery had not help the hospital funds because realistic fee was not charged to recover cost. He continued that funds from the consolidated fund hardly come and this had put pressure on the IGF, which stayed long in the hands of the NHIA.

Mr. Abdulai further said one major challenge the hospital is attracting and maintaining qualifies staff due to serious accommodation problem. The Administrator therefore appealed to government, NGOs and Philanthropists to come to the aid of the Hospital to enable them to provide quality health care to their clients.

Mr. Abdulai thanked Human and Maintenance Foundation for the items, saying it would go a long way to help the Hospital in its service delivery.

The Director of Programmes at the Foundation, Collins Osei entreated the beneficiaries of the items to take good care of them to ensure their longevity .
