The New Patriotic party's The Hague chapter in the Netherlands has held a special meeting at the weekend to declare its support to the petition challenging the validity of the election of John Dramani Mahama as president of the republic of Ghana pursuant to the presidential election held in December 2012, by Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, Jake Otanka Obetsebi-Lamptey at the Supreme court of Ghana.
The Chairman of NPP The Hague Chapter, Mr. Kwabena Opoku Agyemang reminded members of the democratic principles that the NPP stands for. He said, the NPP has been the instigator of almost every reform that the Electoral Commission has initiated in improving Ghana's electoral process. “The use of photo-ID cards, transparent ballot boxes, the recent Biometric registration and Verification are all the hallmarks of the NPP and its quest to strengthen Ghana's electoral process as well as her democracy.” He recounted. Chairman Kwabena Opoku narrated how he and some chapter members and executives went to the Ghana embassy in The Hague, on the morning of Sunday, 14th October 2012 upon information that the Ghana's electoral commission staff was registering some Ghanaians at the Mission. He said, the EC staff refused to register them as voters on grounds that they are neither students on scholarship nor diplomats or UN staff, but failed to give them reason to why the exercise was been undertaken on a Sunday when they enquired. According to Kwabena Opoku challenging the 2012 election results at the Supreme Court was a very difficult but necessary action by the petitioners on behalf of the NPP.
Mr Kobby Annan, the former chairman of NPP Holland, in a power point presentation took the audience through a Three-major ground on which Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, Jake Otanka Obetsebi-Lamptey have petitioned the Supreme Court and the responses from president Mahama and chairman of the electoral commission, the 1st and second respondents respectively. He said, the quoted 241,000 votes by the EC as proxy votes from Ghanaians living abroad are not only funny but fraudulent. Despite the vigilance by party agents and strict rules and regulations enacted to prevent electoral fraud, Chairman Kwadjo Afari Djan did what he knows best. The audience were dumb founded and shocked at the level of electoral legalities and irregularities shown to them by Kobby Annan. He assured all Ghanaians living abroad that the Supreme Court will expose to the world, the greatest fraud ever perpetrated on the Ghanaian electorate by the chairman of the electoral commission, Dr. Afari Djan. He said he is very optimistic the court will rule in favour of the three petitioners. Kobby Annan based his assurance and optimism on the depth of his involvement in the December 2012 elections in Ghana and the documentary evidence that he is privy and exposed to.
Mr. Osei Koranchie Chairman of NPP Rotterdam Chapter commended the flagbearer Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, and Mr. Jake Otanka Obetsebi-Lamptey for protesting through the legal path as provided in the 1992 constitution. The meeting ended with an announcement that a “LET MY VOTE COUNT” rally will be held in April 2013, in the Netherlands to show further support to the petitioners. The rally which host party dignitaries from Ghana is also to continue harnessing further legal and other resources to support the court action.
Mr. Bruce Nimako, the vice-chairman of NPP The Hague, thanked the audience, organisers and the chapter executive committee for the enthusiasm demonstrated towards the event. Also present were Mr. Owusu Akyiaw, Nana Yaw Okoampa Ahinkora and Madam Theresa Osei of the NPP Amsterdam chapter.
