Clergy petitions Appointment Committee over Oye-Lithur

The International Clergy Association has formally petitioned the Appointments Committee of Parliament, to register its reservation about the nomination of gender advocate Nana Oye-Lithur as Minister-designate for Gender, Children and Social Protection Ministry.

Chairman for the Committee Ebo Barton-Oduro announced last week that Nana Oye-Lithur, together with other nominees, will be appearing before the Committee for vetting.

The ICC however says it is not convinced that Nana Oye-Lithur, who is on record to have defended gay rights, is morally fit for that position.

A copy of the petition sighted by Myjoyonline.com, is demanding that Mrs. Oye-Lithur “divorces her pure and unadulterated Christian and cultural virtues and values practiced at home from that of her public and societal work even where they merge”.

OF GHANA'S SOCIAL MORAL FABRIC –
AN OBJECTION TO NANA OYE LITHUR
BECOMING THE MINISTER FOR GENDER,
CHLDREN AND SOCIAL PROTECTION

Pursuant to the President's call on Ministers of GOD to join him at the Castle for a breakfast prayer devotion, we sought the face of GOD for the selection of leaders who would assist in fashioning this Nation in a manner as of realizing the intent of GOD – a people who know their GOD, live in and for Him, serve Him and enjoy the good of the land.

Having scaled through the elections, we now have a President in place who now has the responsibility of forming his Government by nominating people to occupy needed positions.

One such place is the GENDER, CHILDREN AND SOCIAL PROTECTION with its designated Minister, Nana Oye Lithur.

Firstly, the issue about the new name relative the designated Minister's stand in respect of the rights of homosexuality. We are very uncomfortable about the added phrase “SOCIAL PROTECTION”. What other social protection do we seek to give other than the ones already provided for by the laws of Ghana? This is a prejudiced phraseology that in our estimation seeks to give alacrity and unfettered protection to homosexuality.

We do appreciate Nana Oye Lithur's human rights advocacy carried out over the years with passion. Nonetheless, we are at variance with her position on homosexuality when she sought to belittle what President Mills said, that Ghana would not give credence to or legislate any law to back the practice of homosexuality.

President Mills' stand was and still is laudable and a shinning example in Africa where Aid from Britain was made bait for legalizing the practice of homosexuality.

We are aware that Nana Oye Lithur is a Christian and married. We want to believe that her children are not into any of such practices; and that would indicate to us the inculcation of Christian and cultural values into her children.

Going on this tangent, and deducing from her social stand in defence of the practice of homosexuality as of bordering on human rights, we hereby do say that she divorces her pure and unadulterated Christian and cultural virtues and values practiced at home from that of her public and societal work even where they merge. And we find this as very unfortunate.

We wish to humbly appeal to the President to have a second look at the nomination of Nana Oye Lithur. We are not by any means attempting to indict the President or are we seeking to twist the President's hand in his choice.

We are concerned about her strategic position which is likely to be used by those countries who once sought to use Aid as bait to legalize the practice of homosexuality in this Nation. Why? This is because they might have found one who is on the same page with them.

This Ministry is a sensitive area particularly dealing with the vulnerable in society such as children; Hence, the need to have someone who would be able to shield and guide these vulnerable in society. And that is to say, such a person must of necessity be one who epitomizes virtues and values practiced privately and publicly at the personal and corporate levels; one who is an embodiment and enshrinement of such ideals that children can look up to and emulate intoto.
