The Chief Executive Officer of telecoms giant MTN, Mr Michael Ikpoki, has said the company's success is not measured by the number of awards it has won or subscribers it has but by the number of lives it has touched positively.

As far as MTN is concerned, he said, making a positive impact on otherwise desolate people in neglected communities in remote areas in Ghana through its Corporate Social Responsibility was very much part of the company's values and far more important than just winning awards.

Mr. Ikpoki was speaking at the launch of MTN Ghana Foundation's 5th Anniversary celebration under the theme, 'Celebrating 5 years of sustainable Corporate Social Investment initiatives'.

He said although the company had won numerous awards for its CSR activities, it was the smiles that light up the faces of beneficiaries of the activities that MTN was excited about.

Recounting some of the CSR projects undertaken by the MTN Ghana Foundation, Mr. Ikpoki said, “To date we have invested in 71 projects across the country; in every region of Ghana. Of the 71 major projects executed; we have invested in 46 educational projects, including 15 ICT centres and 17 classroom blocks. Others are libraries, dormitories and capacity building for teachers.”

The Foundation, he said had “Invested over GHC 10 ten million cedis since its entry into the Ghanaian market in CSR activities. We are on record as being the single highest donor for the Best Teacher Awards program, having supported it for 5 consecutive years.”

He said the Foundation had also refurbished 25 hospitals and equipped some of them with modern medical equipment.

Mr. Ikpoki applauded MTN staff for donating their time during the MTN Yello Care periods to help better the lives of other people in the various communities.

The Country Director of Young Educators Foundation, organizers of the Spelling Bee Competition Mrs. Eugenia Tachie-Menson, lauded the MTN Ghana Foundation for its unalloyed support for the organisation's work.

She said the Spelling Bee competition was helping children who participate in the competition to develop their confidence and public speaking abilities, things she said were critical for the children's overall development.

The two-day 5th Anniversary celebration will see some four beneficiary schools compete in a debate.
