The Director of Policy Monitoring and Evaluation at the presidency, Dr. Tony Aidoo has descended heavily on critics who are condemning President John Mahama for playing what they called sectarian politics ahead of the December polls.

A group within the opposition New Patriotic Party called the Young Membershave raised concerns about what they say is the tribalistic campaign being embarked on by the President in the three northern regions.

Convener of the group, Samuel Abu Jinapor at a press conference in Kumasi noted that President Mahama told the people in the north to vote for him as one of their own because northerners are tired of playing second fiddle to the Presidency.

This according to Abu Jinapor could be detrimental to the country's growing democracy if all the presidential aspirants base their campaign on tribal lines.

But speaking on Asempa FM's Ekosii Sen Monday, Dr. Tony Aidoo said the NPP's posture is borne out of hypocrisy and double standards.

He indicated that the opposition party is the worst culprit when it comes to tribal and religious politics.

To corroborate his claim, Tony Aidoo said the NPP vice presidential candidate; Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia on a campaign platform at Mantse Agbonaa called on Ghanaians to consider a Muslim northerner vice president than a Christian.

“The same Bawumia has been playing tribal politics ever since he hit the scene trying to mobilize northern votes on the basis of his own religion” he said.

Dr. Tony Aidoo indicated the President in appealing to his kinsmen in the north to vote for him in the upcoming elections has not erred in anyway.

“What President Mahama said makes logical sense. If you can have a full blooded northern President, why go in for a half baked messenger vice-president” he added.
