The Kenyan Peoples Union (KPU) founded by Jaramogi Oginga Odinga was banned by Jomo Kenyatta, President of Kenya.
Odinga had formally been Kenyatta's Vice President and a prominent member of the governing party, the Kenya African National Union (KANU), but he quit his post and left the KANU as political differences with Kenyatta grew, forming the KPU in 1966. However, following the banning of KAPU in 1969 Odinga and other members of the KAPU were detained.
