Sissala West District isolated by recent floods

Wa, Sept. 21, GNA – The Sissala West District in the Upper West Region has been cut off from the rest of the country as a result of the collapse of two culverts on the two major roads linking the district to the rest of the region due to a heavy down poor on Thursday.

The two broken culverts, one of which is located along the Gwollu-Gbal-Zini road and also links Fielmua and the other located on the Gwollu-Tumu road have cut off the district from the Western and Eastern parts of the region.

Mr Moses Dramani Luri, the Sissala West District Chief Executive (DCE) who disclosed this to the GNA on Thursday, said the washed off culverts were making it impossible for vehicles to travel to the district thereby halting commercial activities in the area.

He said the usual busy commercial activities that took place during Gwollu market days did not happen on Thursday as a result of the destruction of the culverts.

Mr Luri said the district also experienced serious power outages as a result of a strong lightening that struck one of the electric poles.

He said the Volta River Authority (VRA) has since managed to replace a damaged electricity pole for the restoration of power to the district.

The DCE said he had since reported the situation of the roads following the heavy rain to the Regional Manager of Ghana Highways Authority.

He said the DCE the Manager would be in the district to assess the situation and see how fast they could work on the culverts to connect the district to rest of the region again.

Meanwhile, reports from Tumu in the Sissala East District, say there is also a heavy flooding along the Tumu- Navrongo-Bolgatanga road making travelling on that road very difficult and dangerous for drivers.

It is also reported that some communities including farm lands have been flooded and life had become difficult for people living in the affected communities.
