Nkroful (W/R), Sept. 21, GNA - A wreath laying ceremony to commemorate the 103rd birthday of Osagyefo Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, founder and first President of Ghana, took place at Nkroful, his hometown and original burial place on Friday, September 21.
A leading member of the Convention Peoples Party (CPP) and former MP for Evaloe-Gwira, Mr. Kojo Armah laid one on behalf of the CPP.
The MP for Ellembelle, Mr. Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah laid one on behalf of government. The Abusuakpanyinli of Nkroful, Nana Adwobia Kpanyinli also laid one on behalf of the Nvavile family to which Dr. Nkrumah belonged.
Awulae Amihere Kpanyinli, Omanhene of Eastern Nzema Traditional Council, laid one on the council's behalf and Mr. Kwesi Berveh, NDC Constituency Chairman laid one on behalf of the party.
In a speech, Mr. Buah said President Mahama is ready for a motion to be tabled in Parliament to lend more credence to the celebration of the Founder's Day.
He said the life of Dr. Nkrumah is worth celebrating because he was a leader who stood for hard work, humility, dedication, selflessness and progress.
Mr. Buah said the new generation is committed to working hard to justify the works of Dr. Nkrumah and asked those who hold the flag of the CPP to do more to justify the ideals of Dr. Nkrumah.
A member of the Council of State and Ahantahene, Otumfuo Baidoo Bonsu on behalf of the Chairman of the Council, did not mince words when he said the NDC was born out of the CPP, hence the celebration of Dr. Nkrumah's birthday is the major pre-occupation of the NDC government.
He said Dr. Nkrumah was a great asset to Ghana and the entire African continent and called for unity, love, peace and civility in political discourse as the nation goes to the polls in December.
The District Chief Executive (DCE) for Ellembelle, Mr. Daniel K. Eshun assured the people that government had the development of the area at heart especially in honour of Dr. Nkrumah.
He said plans were afoot to tackle the 6-kilometer Esiama-Teleku-Bokazo trunk road through the Assembly's Internally Generated Fund (IGF).
Mr. Eshun said Ghana COCOBOD was working on feeder roads in Aiyinasi-North to make the area more accessible to motorists.
He said a modern Information, Communication and Technology centre is currently being built in the Nkroful township and asked the people to rally behind the government.
The Chief of Nkroful, Nana Kwasi Kutua said if successive governments had turned their attention to Nkroful, the town would have developed by now.
He appealed to government to rehabilitate the Esiama-Nkroful-Teleku-Bokazo route, provide Nkroful township with water and accommodation for teachers.
Nana Kutua also called for the estabilshment of a Teacher's Training College in the area to serve schools in the 3 districts of Nzema land.
He called for the return of Dr. Nkrumah's corpse to Nkroful to serve as a tourist attraction for the area to generate revenue for development.
On the impending general elections, the chief said whoever will emerge as the winner will be supported and called for peace and calm during the electioneering
