
Gyedu (B/A), Sept. 21, GNA – Two illegal miners (galamsey operators) were trapped to death in a pit at Gyedu, near Kenyasi in the Asutifi District of Brong-Ahafo Region.
The bodies of Abdulai Razak, 34, Haruna Yaw Ali, 31, residents at Ntotroso had been deposited at the St. Elizabeth hospital morgue at Hwidiem for autopsy.
Briefing the Ghana News Agency (GNA) in an interview in Sunyani on Friday, Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Francis Zangina, Asutifi District Police Commander said the incident occurred on Wednesday September 19, 2012.
He said the deceased were operating a galamsey pit on an undeveloped plot at Gyedu around 19:30 hours.
ASP Zangina explained when the incident occurred some of the illegal miners managed to retrieve the bodies from the pit.
He said preliminary investigations had revealed that several of such pits had been dug behind houses, stand-pipes and around the Volta River Authority transformer station at Gyedu.
ASP Zangina said the police had drawn the attention of the District and Regional Security Councils and would soon mount an operation to arrest the pit owners.
