NEW YORK, September 20, 2012/African Press Organization (APO)/ -- The new Permanent Representative of Sao Tome and Principe to the United Nations, Carlos Filomeno Azevedo Agostinho das Neves, today presented his credentials to UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon.

Until his latest appointment, Mr. Neves was the Director of the National Petroleum Agency's Administrative and Public Department, prior to which he served as adviser to the National Assembly from 2008 to 2009. He was Vice-President to that body from 2002 to 2006, a period in which he also served as President of its Oil and Gas Commission (2004-2006).

Mr. Neves served as President of the Assembly's Economic Affairs Commission until 1998, having won the position after his election as a Deputy in 1994. He was the General Secretary of the political party Acçao Democratica Independente from 1994 to 2002, having previously been Ambassador to Spain from 1992 to 1994 and Ambassador to Portugal from 1991 to 1994.

He holds a master's degree in history from the University of Lisbon and a bachelor's in history from the Classic University of Lisbon.

Born on 20 June, 1953, Mr. Neves is married.
