Government must demonstrate intolerance for corruption and injustice - Rawlings

Ho, Sept 19, GNA- Former President Jerry John Rawlings Wednesday said Ghana needed a government that demonstrates intolerance for corruption and injustice.

He was addressing an emergency general meeting of the Volta Regional House of Chiefs convened at his request in Ho.

Also in attendance were queens from different traditional areas in the Region.

He said governance was an opportunity to do things to consolidate justice, freedom and respect.

“If you don't fight corruption from within you will fail,” he said.

“Do we have the capacity to fight corruption, this is the problem? He said.

Former President Rawlings said the assumption of the presidency by President John Mahama helped to ease the atmosphere of “tension and fear “in the country and the National Democratic Congress (NDC).

Former President Rawlings said the retention of the NDC in power should be based on the conviction that it has the capacity to fight corruption and injustice but not out of fear for the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

Former President Rawlings said there was nothing to fear about being in opposition provided “we consolidate justice and incorruptibility while in office.”

In his address, Togbe Afede XIV, Agbogbomefia, President of the Volta Region House of Chiefs, said the desire of the Region was to ensure that all election related activities were peaceful.

Former President Rawlings later held a close- door meeting with the chiefs and queens.
