A Manifesto Well Thought Out

We are longing for the day when the electorate would study the contents of party manifestoes alongside their feasibilities with a view to making informed voting decisions.

The electorate should also be able to recall previous records of such parties to determine which of them faltered in the implementation of the contents of such documents.

One of the two main political parties in the country, the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has completed its manifesto ahead of the 2012 polls, highlights of which were made available to Ghanaians at a delegates' conference in Accra last weekend.

The ruling party, the National Democratic Congress (NDC), will soon make its manifesto available for the perusal of Ghanaians.

Nana Addo Akufo's lofty educational project, which would make education from the primary to senior high school level free of charge, is adequately covered in the manifesto. It is an important thematic area with which to judge the veteran politician when he comes to power and this he understands perfectly. This is a reason why we should give him a chance.

We have taken note of some interventions, which seem partisan, as they reflect the polarized state of our nation and seek, as it were, to punch holes in the programme.

We find it interesting that people on the other side of the political divide would describe as unfeasible, a programme such as this – a position hinged on unscientific arguments if the noise can really be described as such.

The inability of political parties which come to power to implement programmes they promise and upon which they have been voted to power, has become a nagging challenge for the country. It is the cause of disgruntled electorate developing apathy for elections, concluding rather disturbingly that 'all politicians are the same'.

Given the passion with which Nana Akufo is driving his campaign, whose cornerstone as observed earlier is education, we think that he has something up his sleeves worth exploring.

Compiling and composing a manifesto is no mean feat and we congratulate those behind the tasking activity and wish that the NDC's would soon be available for juxtaposition so the electorate can make informed choices in the polling booth.

Let the communication team of Nana Akufo Addo spread the word of the manifesto across the country. This is a friendly means of enabling the people, especially those not in a position to follow the complex and largely academic debates in the media, to be abreast of such political developments.

A well-thought-out manifesto such as this and feasible as it appears, it is worth considering by Ghanaians.

We wish the party well as we await the NDC's, so we can engage in useful debates that would enable the electorate to make informed choices.
