Security personnel must adhere to road safety regulations

Tamale, Aug18, GNA – Mr Alexander Ayattah, Northern Regional Director of the National Road Safety Commission, has appealed to security personnel in the country to play their respective roles to ensure that the public adhere to road safety regulations.

“I appeal to security personnel to remain ambassadors of road regulations by wearing crash helmets anytime they are on motorbikes, putting on seat belts when driving and obeying road signs so that other road users emulate you,” he explained.

Mr Ayattah told the Ghana News Agency in Tamale at the weekend that the result of these would complement the Commission's efforts towards reducing road crashes by 20 per cent.

He urged religious leaders to use their pulpits to educate the people on road safety because if such messages become a priority in their sermons road carnage would be reduced.

“One thing we should not forget is that there cannot be a church service or gathering at the mosque to worship our maker if we don't have our lives,” he said.

Mr Ayattah appealed to political parties to desist from the habit of using open vehicles, such as tipper trucks, to convey party supporters to rally grounds.

“The nation will soon hold elections so it is important that the right vehicles are used to transport supporters to and from rally grounds to save lives, and for especially, the voting day,” he said.

Mr Ayattah challenged the various political party flag bearers to demonstrate their commitment to ensuring road safety, before, during and after political rallies in this season.

He called on the political parties to include in their manifestoes, strategies that would help reduce road crashes in the country to ensure that people's lives were saved.

Mr Ayattah implored the public not to perceive road safety regulations as bogus because strictly adhering to them would ensure their safety.

He raised the concern about children under 18 years who ride motor bicycles without proper guidance and appealed to parents to be strict and monitor their wards' activities.
