LONDON (AFP) - South Africa, after winning the toss, were dismissed for 309 on the second day of the third Test against England at Lord's on Friday.
Vernon Philander was last man out for 61, his maiden Tests fifty and the joint top of score of the innings after JP Duminy was dismissed for the same total on Thursday.
Fast bowler Steven Finn took four for 75 on his Middlesex home ground as the Proteas, who had collapsed to 54 for four, staged a gutsy late order rally.
South Africa lead this three-match series 1-0 and only need to avoid defeat at Lord's to replace England as the world's top-ranked Test side.
