VIENNA, Austria, August 7, 2012/African Press Organization (APO)/ -- “The agreement reached between Sudan and South Sudan on the transit fees for petrol could signify an important step in the negotiations about the unresolved issues between the two neighbouring countries”, Vice Chancellor and Foreign Minister Michael Spindelegger said acknowledging the agreement reached over the weekend. “The agreement is an important contribution towards creating stability and improving the economic situation in both states, which will in turn be to the benefit of the population in the whole region”, Spindelegger said, who met the Foreign Minister of Sudan Ali Ahmed Karti in Vienna only a few weeks ago.

Spindelegger stressed the involvement of the African Union in the process of solving the open issues and referred in particular to the efforts of former President of South Africa Thabo Mbeki in this respect. Spindelegger also said that Karthoum had agreed, not least upon the initiative of the UN, to grant humanitarian relief helpers access to the people in the provinces of South Kordofan and Blue Nile State at the border to South Sudan, which is an encouraging sign.“It is now essential that the people receive the urgently needed aid as quickly as possible”, the Vice Chancellor concluded.
