Ghanaians observe a week of the death of former President Mills

Accra, July 31, GNA - Hundreds of mourners on Tuesday gathered at the Efua Sutherland Children's Park in Accra to participate in the one week celebration of the death of the President John Evans Atta Mills.

Most of the mourners who were clad in black and red colours, with some wearing T-shirts which had pictures of the late President MIlls embossed on them walked to the park while others arrived in buses, private cars and on motor cycles.

A visit by the Ghana News Agency to the park saw many hawkers selling various items which either had pictures of late President Mills embossed on them as well as other paraphernalia in ther National Democratic Congress colours including scarves, red bands, red hats and T-shirts.

Vehicles and motor-cycles that conveyed the mourners tooted their horns.

The celebration organised by the Greater Accra Regional Coordinating Council was attended by Government officials, some traditional rulers, Ministers of State and other dignitaries.

At the ceremony the national anthem was played, while prayers were said, songs and dirges were sung as a form of tribute to late President Mills.

President John Dramani Mahama addressed the gathering and led them to observe a minute silence for the soul of the late President, and said " I am sure he is looking down on us and smiling. You never know the value of an asset until you lose it".

He assured Ghanaians of his readiness to take up the new responsibilities to ensure that Ghana continued to take the first place in Africa.

There were performances by the National Dance Ensemble and other performers.
