July 23, 2012: Akuse: The Chiefs and people of the Manya Krobo Traditional Area last Saturday celebrated their victory in the Akuse boundary dispute with a call for the continuous display of the Krobo hospitality towards the people of the Osudoku Traditional Area.
The celebration which started with chaotic scenes and clashes between the Krobo youth and a joint Police/Military team characterized by the firing of warning shots and tear gas ended peacefully following the timely withdrawal of the security personnel to forestall bloodshed. One Policeman was hurt in the process.
In his address to the people at the function at Post Office Square, Akuse, Nene Sakite II, Konor (Paramount) Chief of the Area entreated the Krobo citizenry to bury their differences with the people of the Osu State which was born out of the boundary dispute and continue to co-exist in peace.
He said “We the people of Manya Krobo do not have anything against the people of Osudoku, in fact, they are our brothers and sisters of the same tribe. Our problem is mostly with self-seeking individuals who want to foment trouble and sow the seed of discourse between the two hitherto peacefully co-existing states”.
“We remain hospitable and law-abiding but we will not seat down and watch settlers who can't bring themselves to live in peace with us to continue- with impunity- their acts of lawlessness” he added.
He used the opportunity to express his gratitude to the chiefs, queenmothers and the youth for what he described as “an impressive show of Krobo nationalism in defense of the territories of the Manya State”.
Earlier on, a team of traditionalists led by the Chief Priest, Nene Madjanor Treku Okumo III who were detailed in the morning to the celebration ground to perform some pre-celebration rituals were assaulted by an armed gang of about five young men resulting in the injury of one of the an aide to one priest, Kwabena Kenney and the disruption of the rites. He has since been treated at the Lydia Memoria Clinic at Menekpo, Odumase-Krobo.
It would be recalled that In 2010, a Parliamentary Sub Legislating Committee acted on a Local Government Instrument and attempted a re-demarcation exercise to realign some Electoral Areas - Zongo New Town, Akutue, Osukutu, Bungalow, Amedeka, Salon and Natriku- here in Akuse, originally part of Lower Manya Krobo in the Eastern Region to Danmge West (now Shai Osudoku) in the Greater Accra Region, sparking off a chain of legal battle and near clashes between the two factions resulting in the suspension of two national events- the Biometric Registration Exercise in Akuse and the District Assembly Elections in the entire Lower Manya Krobo Municipality.
The Biometric Registration has since been conducted with the Assembly election still pending.
