Federico Macheda reminded Alex Ferguson last night that he could still be a Red Devils star of the future.

The striker is Manchester United's forgotten man — but three years ago hit the goal at Aston Villa that turned the title race in Fergie's favour.

Unsuccessful loan spells followed at Sampdoria and QPR and the future looked bleak.

But with some stars left at home, Macheda was given a chance in the first game of their South Africa tour.

The 20-year-old hit the only goal in the 20th minute against AmaZulu FC.

Dimitar Berbatov provided the through ball and Macheda's finish was class.

He could have had a second just before half-time.
A burst of pace got him away from his marker but he shot inches wide of the far post.

Keeper Anders Lindegaard pulled off a couple of cracking saves to show he is a serious contender to David de Gea.

Ferguson praised Berbatov's performance but said he would would listen to offers for the wantaway striker.

Fergie said: “He's a fantastic talent. The boy wants to play and I'm happy about that.

“But if someone comes in we'd have to assess that situation.”
