Accra, July 15, GNA – A Deputy Municipal Director of Education, has called for the incorporation of more character building lessons into the school curriculum to help lower the alarming rate of drug abuse and crime among children.

Alhaji Yarimia Yakubu of Ga West said the morality of today's children and adolescents was questionable compared to the standards of previous generations.

“Disrespect to our teachers, parents and the elderly, arrogance, exposure of private body parts in the name of fashion and civility, get-rich-quick syndrome among the youth, especially, are some of the outcome of parental negligence of duty,” he said.

Alhaji Yakubu said this at the 4th Speech and Prize-Giving Day ceremony of the Vilac International School in Accra under the theme: “A Sound Home Breeds Healthy Young Minds”.

The educationist said the thriving success of every developed society, had its core hope and future ambitions well-crafted on proper training of the minds of the coming generation.

“The nucleus of every society is the family hence the clarion call to educators, parents, guardians and the society at large to take note by placing ultimate priority to achieve this feat.

“My request is that, the bond between community and school, teachers and parents, parents and pupils would be strengthened so as to propel our future to higher heights.”

Mr Kofi Boakye, head teacher, said in September the school would start admitting students into the Senior High School.

“This branch will also run both the Ghanaian and the British curriculum,” he noted.

He said a group of students would embark on an educational and cultural tour of the United Kingdom to participate in the Summer School Programme of Leicester to strengthen the partnership between the two schools.

A total of 37 pre-school pupils and 45 Junior High School students graduated.
