THE CENTRAL Regional branch of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) has accused the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) of misappropriating $4million it set aside for reconstruction of the Cape Coast Kotokuraba Market.
According to them, the NPP administration left another $8million for reconstruction of the Mankessim and Bawjiase markets.
They have therefore challenged the NDC government to tell them why these modern market complexes have not been constructed since 2009 when the NDC took office.
This was made known during a press conference organized by the party at Cape Coast Wednesday in response to accusations by some NDC gurus in the region that the NPP did not leave behind any money for the reconstruction of the Kotokuraba Market.
Addressing the media, NPP parliamentary candidate for Cape Coast, George Alfred Thompson said 'we are at a loss as to why the Atta Mills led NDC government has not put up a modern market for the people of Cape Coast since 2009 but started demolishing the Kotoka portion of the market while they knew they cannot complete the market on time, compelling the traders to relocate to places that are neither convenient nor suitable for market places…,' he pointed out.
Mr. Thompson said the NDC government had made some market women lose their sources of livelihood as a result of the forced relocation.
He disclosed that even though the current government promised to build the Cape Coast market in the 2009, 2010 and 2011 budget statements, it was nothing but a political gimmick.
He expressed concern about the way Castle Communications Director, Koku Anyidoho mentioned the Kotokuraba market as one of the many projects to be executed and yet nothing has happened till date.
The aspiring MP also wondered why the NDC was in a hurry to demolish the Kotoka market during a rainy season for such a major construction project.
Mr. Thompson was worried that such an important project had become a propaganda tool with the general elections just around the corner, adding that it was obvious the NDC was a failed government that had broken its promises.
He therefore called on the good people of Cape Coast and the region at large to vote for the NPP in the upcoming elections to enable them offer more competent leadership.
