Are There No Prophets In Malawi?
27.06.2012 LISTEN

Church commoners have one advantage, freedom to interact with anybody, clerical or laity. As I go about my daily business, I can't help it but join in the topic of the day – the death of our president and the preceding prophecies from Nairaland. The rumor community has it all over, that the Nigerian prophet had foreseen and forewarned our beloved head of state about the impending doom. I have come across the replays of that prophecy on Emmanuel Television. There's a growing debate as to whether the Nairalander is a genuine prophet or not. I will not dare poke my nose into that for fear of getting it bruised and bloodied by both, his opponents and proponents. There's one question that bothers me though. Why did it take a Nigerian to see the fate of our own head of state? Do we have no prophets here? If we have, then why did they not see it? Do we conclude that our own prophets, the likes of the Bushiris, the Favours, Samuels, the Kayiras, the Kautsires, the Mwiras, those you know, and the ones you don't? Oh yes, the many apostles and the bishops, that litter our motherland, do we have to conclude that they are of inferior quality? We see their adverts in our dailies and weeklies, sometimes backed by colorful posters depicting some of their many crowd pulling ventures. Have they not reached the presidential stage of prophecy? Oh yes, some of them were appointed into institutional positions and had a chance to wine and dine with “moya”, did that not bring the president within their whispering reach? Didn't they feel jealousy and embarrassed to have been bypassed by God on His way to Nigeria? There's a biblical precedence to that. When someone prophesied to the king instead of the other, there were some slaps and a prophetic bloody nose (see 1 Kings 22: 19 – 25).

As a bench warmer, I am truly confused. Every Jim and Jack is now prophet so and so in Malawi today. And why was our God so cruel as to bypass all of them and reveal it to someone in Nigeria? I have seen and heard our prophets prophesying positive and prosperity to our president, couldn't they master the same courage to meet our dear leader and inform him about the impending doom? They have been seen in meetings with him, both in public and private; can we say they were aware of it all, and that they didn't want to disturb national peace? His death was an issue of national importance, and if we as a nation needed a word of caution, it was at this particular time. I am sorry, but I have to be frank here. Our prophets owe this nation an explanation or else we should deduce that they only prophesy to low ranking people and positive issues only.

May be they are not all prophets who call themselves prophets. The Bible has a series of question packed up in 1 Cor. 12. From verse 28, the apostle is addressing a subject on spiritual gifts, he list all the gifts in verse 28. But verse 29 and 30 brings thought provoking questions; Are all Apostles? Are all prophets? Are all Teachers? Are all miracle workers? Have all the gifts of healing? Do all speak with tongues? Do all interpret? The probable answer to all these questions in a deafening NOOOOO!!!!!! We bench warmers easily get lost due to our lack of theological and ministerial training. But still more we have a sixth sense that tells us something is wrong somewhere. So from now on, LEAVE PROPHECY TO PROPHETS, and PREACHING TO PREACHERS. This is just a view from the pew and could be wrong.
