MTN commissions another ultra-modern switch and data centre

Accra, June 7, GNA – MTM Ghana has commissioned another switch and data centre with the most advanced facilities to boost its network quality and provide data protection in order to meet growing needs of customers.

The centre, the third to be built by the company in the country and second in Accra, is located at Shiashi in East Legon. The other two centres are located at Sakaman in Accra and Kaase in the Ashanti Region.

“The varied locations of these switch sites are one of the measures that MTN has put in place to ensure that the network quality is consistently assured,” Chief Executive Officer of MTN Ghana Michael Ikpoki said in a speech read for him by Ibrahim Misto, Network Operations General Manager, to commission the centre on Thursday.

“...what is important to customers is their ability to conveniently and successfully make and receive calls and access to the fastest internet and data services. It is in view of such customer demands that MTN continues to make further investments in the network,” the CEO said.

So far, he announced that MTN's total investment in Ghana is over 1.2 billion dollars. The company, he added had committed 0 million into Africa's largest capacity submarine fibre optic cable.

The commercial launch of the ultra-high capacity West Africa Cable System (WACS) linking Southern and Western Africa to Europe was recently held in South Africa.

“MTN is operating leading edge Blade Cluster Switching Technology to provide higher capacity and enable subscriber calls to be processed at significantly higher speeds,” Mr Ikpoki said.

In addition, he said there had been continuous improvement in subscriber data services across the country through investment in radio and transmission equipment.

Mr Ikpoki said currently the company's challenges include the high incidence of fibre cuts caused primarily by road construction workers, accidents, acts of nature and vandalism, cell site roll out, and power supply.

The company, he said, was very much aware of the inconvenience to customers and the negative reputation effect of network challenges, so management was focusing on several strategies to address the situation.
