Aquaculture-Marine Engineer Shows The Way

Atiteti is a town located a few kilometers from the estuary of the Volta River on the eastern side. The unique town is located along the sea, which is near the plush mangrove vegetation. In the olden days, the whole area was noted for the massive coconut plantation.

Most of the inhabitants are skilled fishermen and women, who fish in the sea, lagoon and the Volta River.

As per custom, the people on the coast of south Volta region, (from Atiteti) have also seen fishing action from Mauritanian to Namibia.

Over the years, the global climatic conditions and illegal operations of foreign fishing vessels in Ghana's waters negatively affected the skilled people who were engaged in the fishing industry.

However, one person, who has foreign experience, continued his profession without going to sea.

Dickson Awuku Kwawu (he is my mother's junior brother), an automobile engineer by professional, later trained as a marine engineer and manned fishing trawlers. He plied his trade in the waters of Cameroon, Equatorial Guinea, Gabon and others. He was based in Malabo, the capital city of Equatorial Guinea in the early 1980s.

As a seasoned fisherman, my 65-year-old uncle, after coming back home to access the situation, decided to do something to encourage his colleague fishermen.

So in 2009, he started his incredible project of digging a fish pond with simple implements like shovel and mattock. Today he has four hand-dug fish ponds.

According to my uncle, the Atiteti enclave is good for fish farming and he would like to urge investors both foreign and local to come and invest. He said the area is good for Lobster, shell fish and others.

Uncle Dickson Kwawu pointed out that tourism is another gold mine with potentials such as golden beaches, mangrove with its captivating scenery, the Volta River and water sports, among others.

Mr. Kwawu, who is also an elder statesman in the area, assured all potential investors that the chiefs and people were ready to help them acquire lands near the lagoon and the river to put up their resorts.

Indeed, as a native of the area, I can assure all who are interested in evaluating the tourist potentials in area, to embark on a weekend trip to Atiteti near Anyanui in the Keta Municipality in the Volta region to see things for themselves.

Any person interested in taking a trip can go either on his own or by public transport.

People from Accra should ask for directions to the Keta Transport station to pick the buses to travel to the area.

There is another town called Atiteti also on the Accra-Aflao road but it is not a coastal town.

For more information on how he operates his fish ponds, one can contact Mr. Dickson Kwawu on his cell number 0549497679.
