Former President Jerry John Rawlings yesterday sent a delegation to the Abossey Okai Central Mosque to make a donation of an unspecified amount of money to the place of worship, and to seek prayers from the congregation as he and his group prepare to celebrate the June 4 uprising on Sunday.
Alhaji Mohammed Naziru, who led the delegation to make the presentation, said the former president sought the prayers of the Muslim community to render protection to all those who would turn up for the event in Aflao in the Volta Region.
The former president, according to Alhaji Naziru, also prayed the congregation of Islamic faithful to pray for the nation during these times when insults and all manner of negatives things are happening in the country.
The donation was received on behalf of the National Chief Imam, who is out of the country, by the Deputy National Chief Imam, Sheikh Kamalu Deen.
Alhaji Naziru, who is a leading member of Friends of Nana Konadu Agyeman Rawlings (FONKAR), reiterated that Sunday's event at Aflao would definitely come on as scheduled.
The donation to the Abossey Central Mosque and the prayers for June 4 forms part of the line-up of activities in commemoration of this important aspect of the country's political history in which the former president played a significant part.
This year's celebration is mired in controversy as chiefs in Aflao ask that the scheduled grand finale of the commemoration be moved from the location to another place.
Their reason for the demand has been ridiculed by a cross-section of Ghanaians, given the fact that chiefs do not give permission for public events and the fact that political machinations have been introduced into the whole thing.
All eyes would be fixated on Aflao on Sunday to see how what promises to be a political drama unfolds, especially as the former President and his group are determined to go ahead with the event.
