Accra, May 30, GNA – Alhaji Yussuf Captain, National Coordinator of Zongo Caucus of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has said plans were advanced by government to offer scholarships to qualified students in the zongos to study in various fields of academic excellence.

He said courses under the scholarship includes medicine, engineering, oil and gas, and the first batch of qualified applicants were being screened and after recommendations forwarded to government for implementation.

Alhaji Captain announced this when briefing Greater Accra Regional Council of Muslims Zongo Chiefs (GARCMZC) on government plans to develop Muslims and Zongo communities through education and proper maintenance of sanitation.

He said the number of students who applied for the scholarships was encouraging and appealed to government to expand the scheme for more students to benefit and advised parents in the Zongo communities to take advantage of the school feeding programme to send their children to school.

Alhaji Captain said the storm drain from Kanda to Mamobi, which was a major problem to the community was under construction and hoped it would be completed by the end of September to save flooding along the Kanda Mamobi area.

“This would improve the environmental degradation and pollution and help solve the problem of poor sanitation in the area.”

Chief Imoro Baba-Issah, Public Relations Officer of GARCMZC, said it was the responsibility of government to ensure that all children of school going age attended school.

He said peace was a requisite for unity and development and appealed to government to ensure that peace was promoted in the country, especially in the Zongo communities and advised politicians to stop the use of intemperate language before, during and after Election 2012.

Chief Baba-Issah said “we as chiefs and custodian of the communities are more concerned about the welfare of our people and prevailing peace in our communities.”
