The Ashanti Region recorded a total of 2,554,866 eligible applicants at the just ended biometric voter registration exercise as against a figure of 2,317.688 recorded in the 2008 general election.

The regional directorate of the Electoral Commission has however, proposed to undertake a mop-up exercise at 26 centers in the region due to some challenges they encountered in those areas, making it impossible for them to register all eligible applicants.

Briefing The Al-Hajj about the exercise, the Ashanti regional Director of the Electoral Commission, Mr. Samuel Tettey said a total of 511,275 applicants were also registered at the end of the first exercise, with 371,998 applicants also getting their names into the Biometric register in the last phase.

Mr. Samuel Tettey pointed out that of the 39 constituencies in the region, Atwima Nwabiagya recorded the highest number of eligible applicants at the end of the four phases, saying the district recorded as many as 118,533 applicants, with Ejisu Juaben being the second highest with a total of 109,206.

The Obuasi Municipality recorded a total of 109,110 during the exercise whiles Manhyia Sub metro recorded a total of 106,263 eligible applicants.

A total of 12,138 eligible applicants were recorded in the Afram Plains District, which recorded the lowest in the region.

On why they proposed to have a mopping-up exercise at 26 centers, Mr. Samuel Tettey, said “while some of the proposed centers were over-populated, we encountered equipment failures at other centres, with some areas getting flooded at the last stages, thus preventing us from completing the exercise in such areas''.
