Workers of GREL demonstrate against management over poor remuneration

Apemanim(W/R), May 23, GNA--About 100 workers of Ghana Rubber Estates Limited on Wednesday demonstrated to press home their demand for better working conditions.

The workers, clad in red armbands and headgear, sang and danced and besieged the company's premises at Apemanim to register their protest against poor salaries and discrimination.

According Justice Cobbinah, a worker, management of GREL paid each worker GHc110 per month which is woefully inadequate to cater for their families.

He also complained that some of the workers had worked as casuals for over five years without being made permanent, which contravenes the Labour Act that makes it mandatory for companies to make their casual employees permanent after six months.

When the GNA contacted the management of GREL about its reaction, it said those demonstrating were not employed directly by the company but headsmen who had been awarded contracts to extract fluid from the rubber plantation.
