FAG petitions A-G over Wayome

A pressure group, Alliance for Accountable Governance (AFAG), has petitioned the Attorney General's Department to expedite action on the trial of businessman Alfred Agbesi Woyome.

The group said based on feedback received from the general public following its May 9, 2012 press conference, it was convinced beyond all reasonable doubt that the good people of this country were in no way prepared for further delays in commencing the trial of Mr. Alfred Agbesi  Woyome.

'To this end, AFAG, acting on behalf of Ghanaians, is calling on you to take a cue from the words of Mr. Martin Amidu, former A-G and Minister of Justice, that 'time is of essence now, otherwise the Republic would be perceived as unnecessarily delaying the case.'

A statement issued by the group noted that in addition the words of advice from Justice Ajet-Nassam, the trial judge, to the prosecution team to 'get serious or throw in the towel,' should inform the A-G to act appropriately.

'Nonetheless, we are of the conviction that in the interest of the people of this country, your outfit will not further delay the opening of the case when court resumes this week. AFAG has no doubt that there is enough evidence and material available for the state to commence the trial.

'In the interest of the state, we urge you to act swiftly by commencing the trial to help dispense justice,' the group noted.
