NDC Youth Activists Not Happy With Konadu's Threat

Nana Konadu Agyeman Rawlings Youth activists of National Democratic Congress in the Volta Region have expressed displeasure over the purported threat by the former First Lady, Nana Konadu Agyeman Rawlings, to stop the party from using its umbrella emblem (Akatamanso), if the leadership of the party continue to depart from the ideals on which the party was established.

According to the activists, the import of the letter addressed to the national executive of the party, if carried out, could divert the attention of the ruling government in its quest to achieve the Better Ghana Agenda, aimed at consolidating the gains made under President John Evans Atta Mills’ administration in its three and half years in office.

The group, therefore called on the national executive of the party not to treat the threat lightly but ‘gird its loins and ward off any danger that the action of the former First Lady could pose in derailing the programmes and activities of the party as well as the government in securing another four-year mandate from the people of Ghana.’

The spokesperson of the group, Mr Boli Dziewornu, who spoke to the Daily Graphic over the weekend, stated that ‘we feel saddened by the hidden agenda of Nana Konadu Agyeman Rawlings, who the larger NDC family had all along considered as the mother of the party, and wondered what she sought to achieve by her action and the threat contained in the letter her lawyers sent to the national executives of the party.’

Mr Dziewornu, who is also the President of the Volta Students Association of Ghana, recounted that even though it was known that

Mrs Rawlings had some differences with the party leadership, ‘we think that no matter the level of rancour between her and some personalities in the party, the issue of withdrawing the party emblem should not have arisen at all since the party she contributed to its formation and growth had used it in five national elections since 1992.’

He said the party leadership must explore all avenues available and work hard to stop the latent threat from Mrs Rawlings so that the party does not suffer unduly at the end of the day.

Mr Maclean Kumedzro and Mr Douglas Binewoatsor of the Ho and Aflao branches of the Volta Youth Network and Homeland Ghana respectively, both youth groups in the Volta Region with sympathies for the NDC, jointly criticised the former First Lady and stated that ‘we are not perturbed by this development. It has rather energised us to step up our campaign to canvas for more support for the NDC to retain power in the December elections.’

According to the duo, members of all the youth groups in the Volta Region who are sympathetic to the NDC will marshall their forces and proclaim to the people of Ghana ‘the unprecedented achievements of the Mills adminstration and win more souls for the party come December.’
